Cumberland School of Law Student Awarded Annual Diversity Scholars Award

Birmingham, AL - Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLC proudly presented its annual 2008 Diversity Scholars Award to Cumberland School of Law student Ms. Jessica Joyce Thomas. Thomas, a second-year law student, received a $2,000 scholarship.

Constangy initiated the award program in order to recognize the achievements of deserving law students and help defray the considerable expense of law school, while promoting diversity in the legal profession. The firm awards scholarships to a second-year law student in each of the regions where it has offices. Award recipients were selected based on the following criteria: academic achievement; commitment to diversity in the community, in the student’s school or work environment; and personal achievement in overcoming challenges to reach goals.

Thomas, the first person in her family to pursue a legal career, maintains a 3.14 GPA. She is a volunteer teacher through the Street Law Program where she teaches at-risk students about various Alabama laws and their rights as youth and citizens. She is also a member of The American Journal of Trial Advocacy, Phi Alpha Delta (a legal fraternity), the treasurer and elected student representative for the Student Bar Association and director of community services for the Black Law Students Association.
