Eight Second-year Law Students Awarded
Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLC 2006 Diversity Scholars Award
ATLANTA - Constangy, Brooks & Smith, a
national labor and employment law firm representing management,
proudly presented its 2006 Diversity Scholars Award, a $2,000
scholarship, to the following students:
- George Washington University Law School student Ms. Laura
Bennett
- University of South Carolina School of Law student Ms. Stefanie
Bondurant
- University of Texas at Austin law student Ms. Shelly Chattopadhyay
- University of Tennessee law student Ms. Jodi Hansen
- Cumberland School of Law student Ms. Jakarra Jones
- Stetson University law student Ms. Karly Rae Schweitzer
- University of Kansas law student Mr. Zach Thomas
- Duke University law student Mr. David M. Thompson.
Constangy initiated the award program in order to recognize
the achievements of law students who are committed to diversity
and have overcome challenges in pursuit of their goals.
About the Students:
Bennett has a 3.71 GPA and is the president
of Lambda Law Chapter.
Bondurant has a 3.2 GPA and is the founder
and president of the International Law Society, Editor-in-Chief,
International Law Society newsletter, volunteers as an Italian
language teacher, as well as volunteers at South Carolina Centers
for Equal Justice and Guardian ad Litem.
Chattopadhyay has a 3.03 GPA and is a board
member and volunteer for Street Law. She is also the membership
chair of American Constitution Society, the law clerk for the
Capital Area AIDS Legal Project, a member of the Texas Journal
on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights and Asian Law Student Association.
Hansen is ranked 13th in her class of 150,
her GPA is 3.62, she volunteers as an English language teacher
to immigrants from South America and Mexico and is a member
of numerous campus organizations.
Jones is ranked 9th in her class of 165, her
GPA is 3.639. She is the chair of BLSA Thurgood Marshall
Symposium and is the only minority member of Cumberland Law
Review.
Schweitzer suffered a traumatic brain injury
in an automobile accident during her undergraduate studies at
Emory University. The next nine months of her life were
dedicated to relearning to walk, talk and write through rehabilitative
therapy. Schweitzer then graduated from Emory on the dean’s
list and proceeded to Stetson University College of Law. She
actively promotes opportunities for disabled individuals in the
legal profession.
Thomas produced documentary documenting collegiate
years of Perry Wallace, the first African American varsity athlete
to play in Southeastern Conference. This documentary was
broadcast over Vanderbilt University’s TV station, as well
as Fox Sports. He petitioned the university to honor Perry
Wallace, and the resulting publicity ultimately culminated in
the Tennessee legislature declaring February 21 “Perry
Wallace Day.” He is currently the vice president
of the Asian Law Students Associations and the founding member
of the Indian American Political Caucus.
Thompson has a 3.13 GPA and he volunteers as a
pilot Guantanamo Bay Defense Clinic.
