The Timberland Company ... Constangy's Second Annual
Corproate Counsel Work-Life Balance Award Winner
Stratham, NH - Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLC awarded its second annual Corporate Counsel Work-Life Balance Award to The Timberland Company’s legal department on Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. Timberland’s legal department received a crystal trophy and a $1,000 donation in the department’s name to the non-profit organization of its choice, OdysseyNH, a New Hampshire-based organization that helps at risk young people, mothers and families.
“Many companies find work and professional demands result in longer workweeks making it difficult for employees to take care of family and personal needs. They are increasingly cultivating an atmosphere that allows for a better work-life balance,” said Neil Wasser, Chairman of Constangy’s Executive Committee. “Our award is just a way to recognize employers who acknowledge the value of implementing successful strategies to assist their in-house attorneys in the pursuit of work-life balance.”
The Timberland Company’s legal department, which consists of Vice President, General Counsel, Danette Wineberg; six attorneys and seven support staff, offers a challenging and rewarding work environment with opportunities for personal and professional growth. Timberland has two significant initiatives that foster work-life balance and enables them to attract and retain gifted and accomplished lawyers and support staff. Timberland’s Path of Service™ program is the cornerstone of their community involvement and consistently one of the most highly ranked benefits in its annual employee survey. Through the Path of Service program, employees get 40 hours of paid time per year to volunteer in their communities. For more than seven years, the legal department has partnered with one of the programs of OdysseyNH, an intensive residential treatment program for emotionally and behaviorally troubled adolescents.
Another popular company initiative is Timberland’s Flexible Options program. This provides eight days of lifestyle leave each year beyond vacation. Lifestyle leave is a unique benefit allowing employees to use this time in the event of illness (their own or a family member’s), or to manage personal business that cannot be conducted outside of regular business hours (such as parent-teacher conferences, doctors appointments, etc.) or school holiday. Friday Flex also allows employees to leave early on Fridays if they meet their work requirements at other times during the week.
The legal department has taken full advantage of the company’s policies on alternative work arrangements. One of the attorney positions has for many years been a job-share -- one position shared between two attorneys - each attorney spends three days in the office. One paralegal is on a reduced time appointment and splits her time between time in the office and time worked from home.
“Balancing career and personal responsibilities can be extremely challenging,” said Danette Wineberg, Timberland’s Vice President, General Counsel. “Timberland recognizes that challenge, and invests heavily in programs and benefits that help support employees’ needs and ensure they're able to enjoy both their work and their personal life.”
Guest judges Dr. Judi Craig and Jim Bird selected Timberland as the winner because of the company’s philosophy and the department’s approach toward work-life balance.
