Atlanta - Constangy, Brooks & Smith
is proud to present its second annual Diversity Scholars
Award to eight law students in each of the regions where
it has offices. The second-year law students will receive
a $2,000 scholarship.
Constangy initiated the award program in order to recognize
the achievements of deserving law students and help defray
the considerable expense of law school, while promoting diversity
in the legal profession. Award recipients were selected
based on the following criteria: academic achievement;
commitment to diversity in the community, or in the student’s
school or work environment; and personal achievement in overcoming
challenges to reach goals.
Recipients
Alabama: Cumberland School of Law
student LaMonica V. Orr is a selected member of the Cumberland
National Negotiations Team and a 2006 competition winner. She
is also the recipient of the 2006 Cumberland’s Spirit
of Service Award. Orr is currently a law school representative
for the Samford University Diversity Committee and the
vice president of the school’s chapter of the Black
Law Students Association.
D.C. – Virginia: Howard University
law student Crissi Robinson taught Street Law in the Community
at the Latin American Youth Center and on Election Day, she
volunteered as a Poll Watcher this past year. She is
the recipient of the 2006 Chris Perrin Memorial and the Dean’s
Scholarship Key from Georgia State University.
Florida: University of Florida, Levin
College of Law student Anastasia Protopapadakis is a teaching
assistant for Legal Research and Writing, the student coordinator
for the university’s student recruitment team, 1L Ambassador
and a member of the Law Association for Women.
Georgia: Emory University School
of Law student Andrea V. Arias is ranked in the top two percent
of her class. She is a member of the Minority Corporate
Counsel Association, Emory’s Hispanic Law Society,
a staff member of Emory Law Journal, secretary of the Student
Bar Association, a research assistant, technical coordinator,
trial techniques program and clerkship coordinator.
Kansas-Missouri: Washington University
School of Law student Elisa Chen is a member of the University
School of Law’s Moot Court and a transfer student representative
on the Graduate Professional Counsel. This past year
she volunteered with Citizenship Day, where she helped immigrants
register for U.S. citizenship without legal cost.
North Carolina: Duke University School
of Law student Aisha D. Gayle earned her BA from Yale University. At
present, she is the vice president of the Duke University’s
Chapter of the Black Law Students Association. Last
year, she attended the NAACP’s annual Civil Rights
Training Institute and served as a Guardian Ad Litem.
Tennessee: University of Memphis,
Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law student Augusta Akpotu is
the president of the Association for Trial Lawyers of America
and International Law Students Association. She is
also the professional liaison co-chair of the law school’s
chapter of the Black Law Students Association and a member
of the Association of Women Attorneys.
Texas: Texas Southern University, Thurgood
Marshall School of Law student William Koffie, Jr. is in the
top 25 percent of his class. He is currently the chairperson
for the Thurgood Marshall Chapter of 100 Black Men, director
of events for Femi Pedro Memorial Outreach and a volunteer
for the Street Justice Program. He is also a member of
the Black Law Student Association, Board of Advocates, the
American Bar Association and the African Law Student Association.
