WINSTON-SALEM, NC- Winston-Salem attorney John Doyle of Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP, has been awarded the Jonathan R. Harkavy Award by the Labor & Employment Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. Doyle is the second-ever recipient of the award, which recognizes attorneys who exhibit outstanding service and leadership and significant contributions to labor and employment law in North Carolina. He was founding chair of the Labor & Employment Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.
In a surprise ceremony held February 3 at the Piedmont Club in Winston-Salem, Doyle was presented the award by his law partner of 19 years, Randy Loftis. Doyle, who is heading a project to videotape prominent labor and employment practitioners from North Carolina, will receive a donation to the project in his name, and a commemorative plaque will be placed in the Bar Association headquarters in Cary, NC.
Greensboro attorney Jon Harkavy, the first recipient of the award and the person for whom the award is named, cited Doyle’s professionalism and contribution to respect for the rule of law.
“I am completely surprised by this award,” Doyle said. He gave credit to Maurice Weinstein and William Sturges, Sr., his mentors, and Loftis and Harkavy as his colleagues.
The video project Doyle is involved with aims to chronicle the career and personal achievements of labor and employment attorneys who have made significant contributions to the profession. The interviews will be archived and available for public viewing, serving as a slice of history for the legal profession and a resource for students and historians.
Doyle is a 1964 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a 1966 graduate of UNC law school. After serving with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he practiced law in Charlotte for approximately 20 years before joining Constangy’s Winston-Salem office in August 1991. He is a past member and chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association, serves on the Equal Employment Opportunity committee of the American Bar Association and the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Federal Bar Association, and was the first North Carolina fellow inducted into The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
Doyle has also been named in Best Lawyers in America for the past 25 years, and has been recognized in Chambers USA and Chambers USA-America’s Leading Business Lawyers, North Carolina Super Lawyers, and the “Legal Elite” of Business North Carolina.
In 2008, Doyle received the N.C. Center for Non-Profits’ Triad Pro Bono Impact Award.
