Patients want to be able to ask their doctors questions by email instead of coming in for an appointment; a Surgical Tech wants to stay connected at work to her young kids through texts; a doctor wants to use his iPad to access patient medical records while on call; a scheduler wants to be able to catch up on work from home using her home computer. Our portable electronic devices can improve patient access, efficiency, flexibility, and employee satisfaction, but as with any innovation, health care employers are seeing new legal and logistical problems arise. The ability to secure confidential information has become harder, while privacy laws like HIPAA have increased in protection and complexity. What should health care employers know from a legal, technological, and practical perspective?

This complimentary presentation will tackle these tough issues.

Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP Partners, Lori Mans and Heather Owen (Board Certified Attorney in labor & employment law), will discuss legal and policy considerations from an employment law perspective including, "Bring Your Own Device" considerations and policies, Confidentiality Agreements, security policies, and litigation hold obligations.

RezLegal, LLC Partner, Elizabeth Shaw (Board Certified in Health Law, Health Care Risk Manager and a Registered Nurse for 20+ years) will discuss the implications from a healthcare law perspective, including obligations under HIPAA and Florida Law, with a particular focus on cloud computing, texting, and use of electronic tablets.

Family Care Partners & Care Partners Technology Privacy Officer, Compliance, Service & Development, Neil VillacortaBuer (18+ years in Information Technology management and compliance, with current focus on health care compliance and privacy), will discuss concerns from an information technology perspective, including logistical and practical considerations with "Bring Your Own Device" policies in a health care environment.

The presenters will then have an interactive panel discussion.

Attendance is complimentary, but registration is required.
