ATLANTA— National labor and employment law firm, Constangy, is pleased to announce the winner of its 2014 Diversity Scholars Award. Selected from the regions in which the firm has offices, this year’s winner is Charmarcus Floyd, Sr. of Nashville.
Floyd’s dedication to diversity awareness is evident from the multitude of achievements throughout his academic and professional career. Floyd received his undergraduate degree from Middle Tennessee State University, where he worked full-time as a counselor at a residential group home for delinquent youth. Following graduation, Charmarcus began his professional career by serving as a probation officer for the state of Tennessee. While working for the state, Floyd decided to pursue law school, motivated by his passion to serve his community and educate victims of hardships about their legal rights as American citizens.
At the Belmont University College of Law, Floyd serves as a devoted member of the Student Bar Association Diversity Committee, where he has also been appointed as Chair of the committee. In his tenure with the Diversity Committee, Floyd has spearheaded an alliance with the Organized Neighbors of EdgeHill, a local non-profit community improvement organization. Working together, the Diversity Committee and Organized Neighbors of EdgeHill are engaging students at the Belmont University College of Law with the Nashville community. The program strives to foster mutually beneficial relationships between Belmont students and community members to effect positive social change and promote education about diversity, poverty and race. Married and a father of three, Floyd and his unrelenting commitment to diversity and enriching his childhood community demonstrate how his passion will benefit the legal profession in his future endeavors.
The recipient of the Constangy Diversity Scholars Award receives a $2,000 scholarship in recognition of his or her accomplishments in academics, commitment to diversity in the community, school or work environment, and personal achievement in overcoming challenges to reach his or her goals. Constangy initiated the award program to recognize deserving law students and help defray the considerable expense of law school, while promoting diversity in the legal profession.
To be eligible, applicants must be a second-year student with a 3.0 GPA or greater, enrolled in an accredited law school that is located in one of the following states: Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, California, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Virginia/Washington, D.C., South Carolina, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
