Overview

Chris focuses his practice on labor and employment, litigation, and sports.

He represents and advises businesses on a broad range of labor and employment matters, including discrimination complaints, wage and hour claims, class actions, employment agreements, restrictive covenants, data privacy, trade secrets, employee handbooks, policies, and internal investigations. He brings more than 15 years of experience across law firm practice, in-house roles, and academia to help clients navigate complex issues with practical, business-minded solutions.

He has counseled and represented various clients in the sports industry, including professional teams, leagues, associations, agents, agencies, athletes, universities, and other businesses. Chris works closely with clients on issues ranging from litigation, employment, and transactional matters to league compliance, sports betting, intellectual property, regulatory and governance matters, and corporate formation. Chris is well-recognized for his deep knowledge of sports and the law, having published more than 30 academic publications, and providing commentary for Forbes.com and teaching online courses for the Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. His approach is collaborative and pragmatic, designed to help clients achieve their business objectives while mitigating legal risk.

Chris previously served as General Counsel for D.C. United of Major League Soccer, acting as chief legal counsel for the ownership group’s sports, stadium, real estate, and operational interests. In that role, he oversaw a wide range of legal issues, including litigation, contracts, sponsorships, stadium operations, sports betting, corporate governance, intellectual property, employment and labor matters, internal investigations, and vendor management. He also managed the Human Resources, IT, and Operations Departments, developing and implementing employment policies covering workplace discrimination, harassment, wage and hour compliance, workplace safety, ethics, confidentiality, DEI, social media usage, performance management, and more.

Chris’s experience includes in-house work with Hilton Hotels & Resorts, where he managed and advised on global disputes, litigations, arbitrations, and mediations, with a particular focus on domestic employment litigation, California wage and hour class actions, and Private Attorney General Act claims. He also previously operated a solo practice representing sports industry clients—including teams, athletes, agents, and start-ups—on litigation, league matters, transactional needs, corporate governance, and intellectual property.

Earlier in his career, Chris practiced at New York City law firms, handling sports law, commercial, intellectual property, securities, antitrust, and employment litigation, representing clients in state and federal courts. He also served as Senior Law and Ethics Associate for the Law and Ethics Initiative of the Football Players Health Study at Harvard University, researching and publishing on legal and ethical issues affecting NFL player health.
