In the News: Rich Goldberg Discusses Ransomware, AI and Cyber Incident Response on Chattinn Cyber Podcast
Constangy Cyber Team vice chair Rich Goldberg recently joined the Chattinn Cyber podcast to discuss the evolving cybersecurity threat landscape, including ransomware and data extortion, artificial intelligence, cyber insurance, incident response planning, and emerging legal risks.
During the episode, Rich explained how ransomware tactics have evolved as organizations have strengthened their backup and recovery capabilities. Rather than relying primarily on encryption, cybercriminals increasingly steal sensitive information and threaten to publish it unless the organization pays.
“A lot of ransomware attacks have become essentially data extortion attacks,” Rich said.
Rich also discussed the developing role of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity. While it remains difficult to determine the extent to which AI is giving attackers or defenders an advantage, he noted that AI could help organizations address vulnerabilities and other security gaps more efficiently. At the same time, he cautioned that the technology remains unreliable and requires human oversight.
Rich emphasized the importance of preparing before an incident occurs through tabletop exercises, risk and gap analyses, penetration testing, and other proactive measures. He also discussed the value of specialized cyber counsel when organizations must coordinate with law enforcement, regulators, forensic professionals, insurers, and other stakeholders while managing potential litigation exposure.
Rich is a vice chair of Constangy’s Cyber Team based in Philadelphia. A former federal prosecutor and cyber attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, he has more than 25 years of experience managing cyber matters and advises clients on data breach response, cyber risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.
