Overview

Bret is a thoughtful employment litigator who represents employers in workplace disputes and brings a practical perspective shaped by both law firm and in-house experience.

In employment litigation matters, Bret has drafted complaints, discovery requests, and other pleadings, prepared responses to dispositive motions and Rule 37 discovery letters, and worked directly with clients to gather facts and provide case updates.

Bret has also worked in-house on a range of legal and compliance matters. His work included assessing premises liability issues across multiple U.S. jurisdictions, conducting document review for compliance and litigation matters, and researching and drafting global confidentiality and intellectual property agreements. He also helped develop an enhanced hiring criteria process aimed at reducing legal risk and analyzed the role of artificial intelligence in the legal field, presenting his findings to corporate legal leadership.

Bret earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, where he was named to the Dean’s List during his final semester and received a CALI Award, recognizing him as the top student in the Mediation course. He competed on the Labor & Employment Law Moot Court Team and was a national competition finalist. He also served as a teaching assistant for a Legal Research & Writing course and was a member of the Veterans Advocacy Society. Bret earned his B.A. in Secondary Education from Grand View University, where he was a student-athlete on the baseball team.

Before entering the legal field, Bret was a junior high and high school teacher and an intelligence analyst in the U.S. Army Reserve. As an educator, he taught Social Studies and introduced the first Computer Science class in his school’s history. During his military service, he monitored enemy force activity in combat zones throughout the Middle East, helped identify safe travel routes for personnel, equipment, and supplies, and provided security for a Brigadier General during a key leader engagement in Iraq.

About Me

Outside of the office, Bret enjoys watching and playing sports. He is a lifelong fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs and is embracing his new city’s teams, the Nashville Predators and Tennessee Titans. He also enjoys spending time with friends and family and reading, particularly history, legal thrillers, and true crime.
