In the News: Chris Deubert Discusses NFL Medical Care and Potential Conflicts of Interest with NBC10 Philadelphia
Constangy attorney Chris Deubert was featured in an NBC10 Philadelphia investigative report examining potential conflicts of interest in NFL medical care following Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts' diagnosis of blood clots.
The report, “Jalen Hurts' diagnosis renews questions about conflicts in NFL medical care,” revisits a 2016 Harvard University study co-authored by Chris that identified potential conflicts arising from NFL team medical personnel's dual responsibilities to treat players and advise teams about their health.
Speaking with NBC10 Investigators, Chris explained how those competing responsibilities can affect trust between players and medical staff, even when players receive high-quality medical care. He also discussed the study's recommendation to separate player treatment from medical evaluations conducted for team business purposes.
Chris noted that the structural concerns identified in the original research remain relevant as the NFL faces renewed scrutiny of its medical care practices.
