Sports Litigation Alert

Constangy attorney Chris Deubert published an article with Sports Litigation Alert on Nov. 4.

The article, “Lawsuit Against NFL Agent Demonstrates Financial Challenges of Industry,” discusses a Sept. 22, 2022 suit filed against NFL player agent Damarius Bilbo in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia (22-cv-3823) by Opes Capital Fund I, LP, a private equity fund. The suit alleges that Bilbo has failed to repay loans totaling $1,325,000 which were intended as “short-term working capital for Mr. Bilbo’s professional sports agency enterprise.” Deubert details how common these types of loans are in the NFL agent business.

Deubert is an attorney with more than twelve years of experience at law firms, in-house, and in academia, with extensive expertise in sports, litigation, and labor and employment. He previously operated as a solo practitioner, representing mostly clients in the sports industry, including but not limited to professional sports teams and athletes, sports agents, a sports marketing agency, and an NFT-related sports start-up. Deubert assisted clients with litigation, league matters, employment, transactional matters, corporate governance, corporate formation, intellectual property, sports betting, and more. From November 2018 to March 2021, he was General Counsel for D.C. United of Major League Soccer.
