Overview

Ryan is a member of the Constangy Cyber Team and is based in Seattle, Washington. As part of the team’s compliance advisory group, Ryan provides strategic guidance to organizations navigating the complex legal landscape of data privacy and cybersecurity.

He advises clients on compliance with a wide range of state, federal, and international privacy laws, helping them develop and implement business-focused data protection strategies that reduce legal risk and align with operational goals.

Before joining Constangy, Ryan spent eight years at Grant Thornton, where he was a founding member of the firm’s Cyber Practice and served as Senior Manager of the Privacy & Data Protection team. He led regulatory risk assessments, developed privacy and governance programs, and advised on compliance for clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies and multinationals to private equity firms and startups. His work included supporting regulatory change management, designing privacy program metrics and benchmarks, and guiding technology selection and implementation for privacy and security operations.

Ryan also supported privacy compliance and risk management at Under Armour Legal’s Connected Fitness and Digital team, focusing on apps, wearables, and e-commerce platforms. In addition to his practice, Ryan teaches at Seattle University School of Law and the College of Science and Engineering, where he leads courses on global privacy, law, and data ethics.

Ryan earned a dual Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Carey School of Law and Smith School of Business, where he served as Associate Editor of The Journal of Business & Technology Law and published on software-related patents. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University and is licensed to practice in Maryland. Ryan also holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) credential from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
