The Massachusetts Department of Family and Medical Leave has sent out the following bulletin to employers regarding their responsibility to select a Leave Administrator to interface with the state in administering the Paid Family and Medical Leave program. We are reproducing it here verbatim for your reference.

Don’t Forget to Register a “LEAVE ADMINISTRATOR” With the Massachusetts Department of PFML

The Massachusetts Department of Family and Medical Leave (DFML) is reminding employers to register a “Leave Administrator” as part of the state’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program. Each company’s Leave Administrator is responsible for reviewing, confirming the accuracy of, and providing details on employee applications for paid leave benefits.

A company’s designated Leave Administrator can create an employer account by going to https://paidleave.mass.gov/employers/create-account/

Once an employer has registered its Leave Administrator, they will receive notices from DFML when employees have started, submitted and received a determination on applications for paid leave. As part of the review process, the Leave Administrator will be responsible for confirming employment details and flagging any potential concerns they have with the application for paid leave. The Leave Administrator will then have 10 business days after an application has been submitted to review and confirm the details which will assist the DFML with its determination on the employee’s request for paid leave.

If a company has not registered a Leave Administrator, or if the Leave Administrator does not review an application within 10 days, DFML will base its decision solely on information supplied by the employee and medical provider, if applicable. A failure to register may leave an employer unaware that an employee has been granted paid leave. When DFML has made a decision on an application, the Leave Administrator will be notified.

For more information about the Leave Administrator process, call the PFML contact center at 1(833)344-7365 or visit https://www.mass.gov/info-details/employer-role-in-the-paid-family-and-medical-leave-review-process.
